Frank’s Model Railways Locomotives

Most of my locomotives used on my layouts are modified RTR (Ready To Run) items from various manufacturers, Hornby, Bachmann, Dapol etc.

The brief description next to each picture describes some of the modifications to each loco and how I did them.

0-6-0PT No 5774

This was an early Bachmann RTR model. Modifications include, Sprung buffers, Vacuum pipes, Screw couplings, Fire iron hooks, etched number plates, crew and real coal in the bunker.

Weathering was done with paint (artists acrylics) and powders.

Although not common in the area I am modelling it looks “at home” on the layout.

BR Standard class 4  4-6-0 No 75059

This was an early Bachmann RTR model. Modifications include, Replacement

chimney, Smokebox door dart, Screw couplings, Vacuum and steam pipes, ATC guard, crew and real coal in the tender.

Weathering was deliberately heavy as I wanted to emulate the prototypes as I remember them.

A mixture of artist acrylics, enamels and powders were used for weathering.

Ivatt Class 2  2-6-2T No 451233

Another Bachmann RTR model, bought with the intention of conversion to a BR standard class 2 tank. In the end I chickened out and kept it as Ivatt intended!

The most significant modification made to this model was to fit the missing motion support brackets that Bachmann for whatever reason left off!

The lubricators were replaced with brass items, screw couplings, Vacuum and steam pipes, crew and real coal complete the work.

Again, Heavy weathering with acrylics and powders.

This was an early Bachmann RTR model. Modifications include, Sprung

Buffers, Detailed firebox back head and screw reverser, Smokebox door dart, Etched number plates, Screw couplings, crew and real coal in the

tender. I also modified the loco/tender coupling to reduce the gap between the two as the minimum radius curve used on my layouts is 3ft.

0-4-2T No 1432

This was a Hornby (Ex Aifix/Dapol) RTR model. Modifications include, Steam and Vacuum pipes, Screw couplings, Fire iron hooks, etched number plates, New smokebox door and dart, Auto train gear, crew and real coal in the bunker. I have still to replace the wheel sets with scale items.

Weathering was done with paint (artists acrylics) and powders.

2-6-0 No 46520

A Bachmann RTR model with modifications.

The wires from loco to tender originally intended for DCC use were removed as my layouts use old fashioned DC control!

My usual added detail includes wire vac and steam pipes, lamps, screw link couplings, loco crew and light weathering.Real coal has been used in the tender.
